ERM Power has a proven commitment to the environment and to sustainability, recognising that electricity generation needs to meet society's requirements for reliable, low cost energy supply, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, water conservation and sustainable development. ERM Power has taken a significant strategic position in the development of low-emissions technology. Currently in Queensland, ERM Power is focusing on the development of the Braemar Expansion Project, which will add an additional 450MW of gas-fired generation capacity in the state. This technology produces 30 per cent less greenhouse gases than a coal-fired plant, and considerably less other pollutants such as sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxide. As an added benefit the air cooled gas-fired units will use minimal water and considerably less than coal-fired power stations.
Through its retail business, ERM Power offers renewable energy and carbon-offset products to customers that elect to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and increase their environmental credentials. ERM Power has also developed an emissions trading capability, dealing in renewable energy certificates, greenhouse gas certificates, gas electricity certificates and voluntary emission reduction credits. Furthermore, ERM Power's trading capability is well positioned for the introduction of the National Emissions Trading Scheme and the prospective opportunities that will arise from the Australian Government signing the Kyoto Protocol.
